Infrastructure, RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre, Warrington, Cheshire.
Visited August 2023.
RAF Burtonwood was one of those places that growing up was just there. You would drive past the old hangars on the M62 which cut straight through the site and runway, of which part of it was still there.
Further up on the way to IKEA from Warrington Road, huge hangars that went on for miles were all lit up in orange soda lights. It was active from 1940-1993 and was the largest USSAF base in Europe.
I suppose if you live near these places you don’t really think about them until they start to vanish.
The original museum was in the airbase side and I remember going with my dad about 30 years ago maybe longer and it was still active although closing down USSAF base. I bought this book there.
The Heritage centre is now in Gulliver’s World car park and it is honestly wonderful. It is really deceptive as well and full to the top of memorabilia and plane parts.
If anything, it made me sad that I never did go and photograph the site more whilst it was still there. THIS SITE, is excellent though and has a wealth of pictures and information.
Go HERE to see a video of what you would mainly see around the area. This is more how I remember it as a kid, bleak and on the way to the services to get my Shell collector stickers.
Go HERE to see this wonderful video of the railway line that ran around the site.
