Neolithic- Silbury Hill- Wiltshire.
As the A4 dips and then rises, you are greeted quite suddenly with a large green hill that looks rather like a jelly. After the upset at Avebury I needed my next stop to be perfect. In Adam Thorpe’s book., On Silbury Hill he says "The point about Silbury Hill, is that she has no point."
I felt similar. After a long drive to see all the sites around the radius of Avebury, I sort of felt a bit cheated. It is impressive and very odd but yes what is the point?
Walking around the perimeter the air was strange. Bright April sunlight started to blur my eyes and a herd of cows started to run across the adjoining field. West Kennet was out of the question as time was running out plus..cows.
Moving around to the car park, I was followed by another robin but this time shouting and prancing at me to leave.
A man startled me and ran out of the blackthorn bushes and then sped off in his car. I tried to ignore this and read the information board. I think it was a quick toilet break but you never know these days.
I stood for a good ten minutes with the hill and we decided between us that maybe it was time to go now and keep what I had thought and seen to myself. A red kite started to scream overhead and I agreed with the hill and the kite to leave.
