Castles-Halton Castle-Halton-Cheshire.

Visited June 2025.

There are pictures of my mum and dad at Halton Castle in the olden days. I had a vague idea where it was and that you could see it from the top of Kingsway in Widnes but no more than that.

Navigating the many lanes off the bridge and trying to find the brown direction sign, I pulled up to a pub called The Castle. At first I couldn’t see much and I wanted it to be like the old photos. Going into the pub which has a lovely cat, I did what I suppose nobody does and asked the bar staff where the Castle was. Obviously it was through the door at the back and for this question I am truly sorry to you.

Once you are in the beer garden the Castle site opens up and the views are wonderful. You can see Wales, Liverpool, over to Manchester, the Pennines, the Cheshire Gap, loads of stuff.

I was very pleasantly surprised and it was such a lovely place to visit. Also, during the English Civil War, the castle was used as a prison and as a Royalist base, but was destroyed on being captured.

You can learn more HERE and the Castle also appears in this Runcorn New Town documentary.
