Resting Places-Thomas Nuttall-Botanist. Christ Church, Eccleston, St Helens.

Thomas Nuttall was an English botanist and zoologist. Born in England in 1786. At fourteen, he was apprenticed to his uncle, and educated himself in botany and geology. At age 22 he sailed to America, making his way to Philadelphia where he met Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton, a professor of natural history and botany at the University of Pennsylvania, and embarked on the first of numerous botanical collecting trips. From 1836 until 1841 Nuttall worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. During this time he made contributions to the Flora of North America being prepared by Asa Gray and John Torrey. (adapted Looking back at life of famed botanist | St Helens Star)

The death of his uncle then required Nuttall to return to England. Inheriting Nutgrove Hall, providing he stay there nine months out of each year. (adapted Brief life of naturalist Thomas Nuttall, by John Nelson | Harvard Magazine)

He died in St Helens, and is buried in Christ Church in Eccleston.
