Walks, Frensham Little Pond, Surrey.

Visited January 2026.

A peculiar place near peculiar roads with signs that are so small you may miss them. One said ‘onds’ so I guessed that was the way in.

The drive up to the car park is great. You are immediately put into another world of giant pine trees and heathland.

It was quite late in the afternoon when I arrived so there wasn’t much daylight left but it was empty and quiet and this is a good thing.

Frensham Ponds were originally created in the 13th century to supply fish to the Bishop of Winchester. Medieval times eh?

Waverley Council says;

‘The site is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and includes dry heath, wet heath, open water, reedbeds, alder carr and woodland. The heathland is an internationally rare habitat and the common supports a wealth of associated wildlife including sand lizards, Dartford warblers, nightjars, and unusual plants such as the insectivorous sundew.’
